Hey nerds! I went to the Imaginales!
I've been going to the Utopiales SF/Science Convention every year for about 20 years, but I had never made it to the city of Epinal's nerdy landmark.
I have to admit, it's kind of an adventure to get there, but it's super cozy! Don't get me wrong, I will always be Team Utos, but if what you're looking for is easy access to your favorite authors for a chat or just to get a book signed, this is the place. There was never a line anywhere! You could just show up at a panel 10 minutes late and find a seat. Unheard of.
I wasn't there for very long, but I managed to attend a bunch of panels, so here's some inspiration for your summer readin' (haven't read any of these myself yet, but they sounded really good):
Forest-themed novels
Patrick K. Dewdney writes in French (!) and his YA novel L'enfant de Poussière came highly recommended at last year's Page des Libraires' YA shindig, as well as at the Montreuil Young Adult Book Fair. Already on my reading list!
Stefan Platteau is Belgian and writes in French. He is also a very talented public speaker! It's the second time I see him at one these things, and it's always a pleasure to hear his poetic throughts on literature, the universe and everything!
Alternate history: reinventing the Roman Empire
Starring rising-Fantasy-star Estelle Faye. I am not convinced by her writing yet, but this made me want to try La voie des Oracles again!
And a complete discovery for me: history-teacher-turned-fantasy-writer Rachel Tanner, whose book Le Culte de Mithra sounded a bit Game-of-Throny, with an emphasis on wars of religion. Yes! And can we talk about this cover? Gorgeous!
And, OBVIOUSLY, the main attraction: Alain Damasio, more on the Sci-Fi side of things this time, with Les Furtifs, a story of AIs and digital alter-egos, complete with matching soundtrack, as Sir Damasio is wont to do.
